I love strength training. There's something so empowering about being able to lift a heavy object without asking for help. Strength training has many benefits which include:
Aesthetics - sculpted muscles look great
Prevention of diseases such as diabetes and osteoporosis
Increased metabolism which helps to control weight
Prevention of falls and the ability to take care of yourself as you get older
In spite of these benefits, many women shy away from strength training. Some are afraid it will make them too bulky. It won't. We don't have enough testosterone in our bodies plus we typically don't eat enough protein.
Other women skip strength training because they hate the activity. My sister, Mary, is a prime example. She avoids it like the plague in spite of me nagging her all the time. The good news is, you can get by with just 3 moves that will tone your entire body.
Push Ups (1st photo) Yes, that dreaded old move from gym class actually works very well at toning your upper body. If you can't do the traditional form, start with "girl" push-ups on your knees and slowly work your way up. Make sure you keep your elbows close to your sides.
Squats (2nd photo) These bad boys do wonders for your lower body. Pretend you are getting ready to sit in a chair and push that booty down and back. Watch your knees and make sure they don't extend past your toes. For added resistance you can even hold weights in your hands.
Superman's (3rd photo) In our case it should be called the SuperWoman's. This move really tightens up your center, especially your back. You can hold your arms and legs or flutter them for added resistance. FYI - you don't have to raise them too high off the ground.
